Product name:
Whole blood - The fluid circulating through the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins, carrying nutriment and oxygen to body cells, and removing waste products and carbon dioxide. It consists of the liquid portion (the plasma) and the formed elements (erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets).
Packed cells - A preparation of blood cells separated from liquid plasma, often administered in severe anemia to restore adequate levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells without overloading the vascular system with excess fluids. Also called as Packed Red Blood Cells.
Fresh frozen plasma - An unconcentrated form of blood plasma containing all of the clotting factors except platelets. It can be used to supplement red blood cells when whole blood is not available for exchange transfusion or to correct a bleeding problem of unknown cause. It is also used to correct disseminated intravascular coagulation.
Platelet concentrate - Platelet concentrate is obtained by the process of spinning down the patient's own blood and collecting the buffy coat which contains the concentrated platelets and white blood cells. This technology uses a centrifuge to separate out the patients own blood components by their various densities. The red blood cells (RBCs) are denser and will move to the bottom. The plasma fraction is the least dense and will float on the top layer. The "buffy coat" which contains the majority of platelets will be sandwiched between the plasma and above the RBCs.
Platelet rich plasma - Plasma prepared by centrifugation to separate out red blood cells but not platelets for transfusion.
Random platelets - A small disk or plate like structure, the smallest of the formed elements in blood. Blood platelets (called also thrombocytes) are disk-shaped, non-nucleated blood elements with a very fragile membrane; they tend to adhere to uneven or damaged surfaces. They average about 250,000 per cubic millimeter of blood and are formed in the red bone marrow by fragmentation of megakaryocytes, the largest of the bone marrow cells.
Cryo precipitate - A precipitate that forms when soluble material is cooled, especially a precipitate rich in factor VIII that is formed when normal blood plasma is cooled.
Washed R.B.C - Hemoglobin-containing blood cells that transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues. In the tissues, the red blood cells exchange their oxygen for carbon dioxide, which is brought back to the lungs to be exhaled.
Granulocytes - White blood cells with granules of cytoplasm.
Single donor platelets (S.D.P):- Platelets are required to control internal bleeding that occlude to either deficiency or impaired function resulting from disease or treatment.
